Avish Lane
There was very little wrong with this garden. This home was built in 1984 and like most of us, has evolved over the past 40 years. The eastern-facing side of the house features a beautiful parterre rose garden. Over time, however, the magnificent ginkgo has grown so much that the roses don’t get the morning sun they need to thrive. Instead of ripping out all the roses, the homeowners decided to phase out the roses, add in more green plant material, to create a beautiful green garden room in its place. We thought it best to create a border of boxwoods around the garden and to add in more boxwoods in key points throughout the parterres. In addition to the boxwoods, we planted white geranium, pachysandra, and vinca. We look forward to the coming growing seasons to witness how this beautiful garden room takes on a new shape and meaning.

After: the middle circle adorned with dwarf Korean Boxwood and Vinca

After: before the vinca was planted, we lined just about every corner with a boxwood

After: a view from the bedroom above looking down on the newly planted boxwood garden

After: the parterre's starting to fill in

After: a view of the parterre garden out of the main bedroom window

very brief drawing of the plan
Before: There was a time when the roses flourished in this space.
